Newsletter Term 4 Week 4 (4.11.22)
Dear Parents
It was wonderful to have so many grandparents visit today for our special celebration. Year 4 led the assembly with prayer and their own rap for grandparents which made everyone smile. Two of the choirs sang a couple of their songs. Classrooms were open for the visitors and they were all hives of activity. The children loved showing their special visitors their work and I know many were amazed at some of the things that happen in classrooms these days. Morning tea was held in the hall where everyone could enjoy a cuppa and the yummy scones in a quieter space. It was so gratifying to hear the genuine praise from our guests for how we do things at St Anthony’s. For many this was their first Grandparents’ Day (as we were unable to celebrate it the past two years) but I am sure it won’t be their last. We hope the memory of today lingers for the weeks ahead. Thank you to everyone who helped with today but an even bigger thankyou to all those who came along to make it such a wonderful heart-warming morning.
The Catholic Schools Office has been moving towards a two Assistant Principal model in all primary schools in the Diocese. I am delighted to announce that our new APs commencing these new roles from next year are Julianne Barlogio AP - Learning & Teaching and AP – Mission is Gemma Ballantine. Julianne, as many of you would know, has done an outstanding job in the area of Additional Needs and Inclusion for the past three years. Gemma will be new to our school. She has been an AP – Mission previously when at St Francis Xavier School in Woolgoolga but is currently an Education Officer for Mission looking after the eleven primary schools in the Clarence region. Meanwhile Kim Naylor has accepted the Leader of Pedagogy role for the next two years. Kim has been doing this in an Acting position this term while Lauren Magnus was Acting AP at St Finbarr’s in Byron Bay. Lauren will now officially be AP – Learning & Teaching at St Finbarr’s from next year. We congratulate them all on their appointments. Mr Mick Kennedy who is currently on leave will resume his AP – Admin role when he returns.
Mrs Pip Brown is on sick leave until the end of the year. We wish Pip all the very best and assure her of our continued prayers so that she makes a good recovery from her illness. Mrs Jan Jeske will be taking Pip’s place in Year 2 in her absence. We thank Jan for agreeing to do this. Ms Alice Nelson will be looking after Stage 1 & Stage 2 Indonesian lessons for the remainder of the year.
Parents please do not drop your children at school before 8.00am. If you have a need to do this on a regular basis you should be utilising Before School Care. There is no one on duty at school until 8.15am. If children come to school before this, they are expected to sit quietly in the quadrangle until a teacher comes on duty.
I appreciate it when parents take the time to come and chat with me if they have concerns about something at the school. I do not appreciate anonymous letters sent through the post. At St Anthony’s we endeavour to be respectful and teach respect.
We were saddened to hear of the death of Fay Gleave OAM last week. Fay came to our school every year to teach First Aid to the children. She was a truly wonderful person and she loved coming to our school. She will be missed. Fay’s funeral will be held at 10.00am on Monday. Some of the senior students will form a guard of honour.
Last Friday we celebrated World Teachers Day. Our school leaders led a beautiful prayer service for the staff and handed out some treats to each of them. We appreciate all that everyone on the staff does to make St Anthony’s such a special place to be.
We encourage all St Anthony’s families to join in the Parish Mass this Sunday at 9.00am. School staff will once again lead all the ministries. Children’s liturgy will also take place.
Let nothing disturb you; let nothing frighten you: Everything passes away except God; God alone is sufficient. (St Teresa of Avila)
God bless
Lynne

EXURO RETREAT
Last Tuesday a small number of our Year 5 students attended this Retreat Day with students in Year 5 from other schools in our Diocese.
Exuro (Latin for “on fire”) is a student discipleship formation program for year 5 students that helps strengthen the Catholic lives of practising Catholic students and keep the fire and passion of Proclaim Lismore Students alive in Parish Primary Schools. Exuro was a one-day Faith Retreat experience using various prayer methods, group processes and student-led discussions to equip students to be faith leaders in their Parish School Communities. |
Grandparents Rap by Year 4
It's Grandparents' Day and we're here to say,
We love our Grandparents in a major way.
So sit right down and take a seat,
And we'll put on a show that you just can't beat!
Pop laughs about all the books, that Nana buys but she rarely cooks.
Grandpa loves fishing, he says he’s tops, but we always see Grandma at the fish shops.
Vova goes out with the girls in town, Vovoo waits to get the low down.
They go to work that’s what they do, but they still manage us at the pick up too.
Sleepovers at their house are always great, we eat lots of treats and we stay up late.
They laugh, they listen, they always share.
They understand us and they’re well aware.
Cause they're hip, they're cool, they know what’s what. And we know that they love us a lot.
Times have changed in many ways; things were different in the old days.
To all the Grandparents here today, the class of year 4 would like to say,
That our love for you goes on forever, we love the times when we’re together.
It’s Grandparents’ Day and we’re here to say,
We love our Grandparents in a major way.
It’s Grandparents’ Day and we’re here to say,
We love our Grandparents in a major way!

Todd Woodbridge Tennis Regional Finals
On Friday 14th October, nine Year 4 students travelled to the Byron Bay Tennis Centre to compete at the Regional Finals of the Todd Woodbridge Tennis Tournament. Our school was selected in the finals after a successful result at the local tournament in Murwillumbah.
All of the students played to the best of their abilities while displaying a high level of sportsmanship and teamwork. This component becomes very important during the tennis tournament as the Todd Woodbridge Cup is played in teams rather than singles. After the round games St Anthony’s finished equal 3rd with 3 other schools, therefore a countback was needed to determine the 3rd and 4th position for the final round. Unfortunately we finished 5th overall, just outside the top 4. After a playoff for 5th and 6th position, the team won their last game ending in 5th place.
Congratulations to the following students for your effort on the day with such a close finish:Harper Gallagher, Sidney Pitfield, Mads Nielsen, Jax Nash, Layla Edwards, Ellie Neaves, Sophie Ozolins, Aria Boyle and Flynn Horton couldn’t compete due to injury but helped out the team on the day.
Many thanks to Mrs Neaves, Mrs Horton, Mrs Nielsen and Mrs Boyle who helped transport the students to and from the event and for being such fantastic spectators on the day, it’s much appreciated.
PSSA Athletics
Congratulations to Harper Gallagher and Eden Usher who represented the Polding Athletics Team last week at the PSSA Athletics championships.
Harper competed in the 200m and High Jump and Eden competed in the 100m and the Long Jump Multi-Class events. Both achieved pleasing results on the day.
This was a great achievement for these 2 students and good luck in your future Athletic endeavours.
Soccer News
Congratulations to our superstar soccer player Kaynan Behs who was recently selected in the U/10’s Australian Football Team. He is currently in Singapore competing at the IBERCUP International Youth Football Tournament. What an amazing achievement, good luck Kaynan and we look forward to hearing all about your trip.

Casuarina Cup 2022
The Casuarina Rugby Union Cup was held on Thursday.
St Anthony’s competed in the Open Boy’s division and The Open Girl’s division.
The Open Girls team competed on a development basis where the emphasis was on learning the rules of Rugby and having plenty of fun at the same time. They competed wholeheartedly and improved with each game with Mr.Tierney’s guidance. There were many smiles evident at the end of the day as well as a few new bruises!
The Open Boy’s played four games, winning two, drawing one and losing one. They were very competitive and improved every game, combining well as a team, displaying great team spirit and sportsmanship. Thanks to all our parents who supported the teams and we look forward to extending our participation in the competition next year.
Yours in Footy,
Pat Tierney, Paul Monahan
